It’s hard to imagine Leigh being anything other than the flourishing town it is today, attracting visitors all year round with its cafe culture and charming shops, but something is indeed changing. Leigh is increasingly attracting attention from big name chain brands that are keen to make an easy buck off of the town’s current popularity, threatening the diversity and individuality that Leigh currently has. In response to this, the ‘Love Independent Leigh’ campaign was launched with the intention of raising awareness about the issue and bringing traders and residents together to ensure Leigh retains its independent businesses and, with them, its unique character.
Having launched in February, the campaign’s Facebook group quickly gained support from locals and now has over 88O followers. ‘Love Independent Leigh’ posters have been popping up outside a number of independents around town who are eager to show their support and a number of other activities are in the pipeline to actively encourage shoppers to support the independents –
including a ‘Love Independent Leigh’ event day this summer – Saturday 3 June 2017.
Local resident and founder of the campaign, Francesca Quinn, says, “A lot can be achieved when people come together in a positive way to speak up for what they believe in. There’s a fantastic sense of community in Leigh and it’s been great to see that in action through the campaign. A bland high street full of chains is not what people want here and now they have a platform to express that and actively prevent it.”
Look out for offers and activities along the Leigh Road and and throughout Leigh-on-Sea this Saturday. You can pick up a free guide booklet from participating Independents, full of tips on where to find the offers and activities!
